June 2024 Incident

Wetaskiwin man arrested twice in two days, sentenced in first incident near Dickson Dam

Aug 16, 2024 | 4:17 PM

A Wetaskiwin man arrested and charged twice in the span of 24 hours this summer has been sentenced to 20 days in prison.

Jamie Swinamer, 35, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Aug. 9, 2024, after being convicted on charges of obstructing a peace officer, and two counts of fail to comply with a release order.

Swinamer is also scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Aug. 19, 2024, in relation to the second incident over two days.

In the second incident, he faces counts of theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, possession of property over $5000, fail to comply with a release order, driving a motor vehicle without insurance, and driving a motor vehicle while unauthorized.

It was on June 28, 2024, when Innisfail RCMP were called to investigate a suspicious vehicle near the Dickson Dam.

Mounties say occupants of the vehicle were screaming at each other and causing a disturbance. RCMP say they were able to de-escalate the situation, however, one of the persons allegedly provided members with a false name.

The male suspect was arrested and charged with one count of obstruction, and two counts of failing to comply with release conditions, plus he had outstanding traffic warrants out of Wetaskiwin, note RCMP.

Swinamer appeared before a judge the next day and was subsequently released.

But later that day, on June 29, 2024, an SUV was allegedly stolen from a home in Innisfail.

According to Mounties, a family member saw the vehicle on the QEII Highway near Wetaskiwin, where it was intercepted by local RCMP, who arrested the driver.

Swinamer was again arrested, and further charged with the following:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime;
  • Fail to comply with release order;
  • Drive while unauthorized;
  • Drive uninsured motor vehicle.

Police say Swinamer was given another hearing and that time was remanded.
