Red Deer man sentenced in stolen vehicle strikes police car incident

Aug 16, 2024 | 1:53 PM

A nearly one-year prison sentence was handed to a Red Deer man this month who was charged after a stolen vehicle fled RCMP and struck a police car before becoming stuck in the snow last year.

Brandon William Wallner, 34, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Aug. 8, 2024, after being found guilty on six counts, including:

  • Flight from peace officer
  • Possession of property under $5000
  • Dangerous operation
  • Driving a motor vehicle while unauthorized
  • Operating an unregulated motor vehicle/trailer
  • Driving a motor vehicle with no insurance

Wallner was sentenced to 340 days imprisonment, less 310 days of pre-trial custody, leaving him 30 days left to serve as of Aug. 8, 2024. His sentence came after a trial in Red Deer Court of Justice on July 10, 2024.

Wallner’s co-accused, Kali Rae Miller, 31, of Trochu, however, saw all of her charges withdrawn on Jan. 19, 2024.

It was on Oct. 28, 2023, when Innisfail RCMP say they were conducting a patrol in Springbrook looking for a prolific offender from the Penhold area. While on patrol, RCMP members located a stolen Dodge sedan.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, Mounties say the vehicle drove away at a high rate of speed, striking a police car, causing minor damage.

RCMP say the stolen vehicle immediately became stuck in the snow where police arrested one male and one female suspect. Mounties allege the female suspect was also found to be in possession of stolen credit cards, and non-taxed cigarettes, noting she was also wanted on numerous warrants from Three Hills and Red Deer, at the time.

Brandon Wallner was charged with:

  • Flight from Police
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Traffic Safety act offences (x3)

Kali Miller was charged with:

  • Flight from Police
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Identity Fraud
  • Possession property obtained by crime under $5000 (x2)
  • Possession of stolen credit card
  • Possession of non-taxed cigarettes
