Province selects contractor for Red Deer hospital redevelopment project

With site preparation work already underway, the Government of Alberta is revealing which company has been chosen as contractor for the Red Deer Regional Hospital redevelopment project.

Clark Builders has been chosen following what the Province says was a competitive procurement process. The Alberta-based company will build the new patient tower, plus expand and renovate the existing hospital structure.

Construction will start on the tower by ‘early 2025,’ the Province says, adding that other renovations will be done with a focus on minimizing any disruption to hospital operations.

“This construction contract award is a significant milestone in moving the Red Deer Hospital project forward. To this point, all the work – planning, design, and procurement – propelling the project forward has been behind the scenes,” says Pete Guthrie, Minister of Infrastructure.

“Now, everyone will see the physical work as contractors set up offices, equipment, fencing, and signage on site. I am excited to see progress on this project and for the people of Red Deer.”

As has been well-publicized, the project, once complete, will add 200 inpatient beds, increase the size of the emergency room, and add six operating rooms.

It will also see the addition of a Medical Device Reprocessing department, plus new cardiac catheterization labs, and a centralized power plant.

“The Red Deer Regional Hospital redevelopment project is a priority for our government,” says Adriana LaGrange, Health Minister, and MLA for Red Deer-North.

“We recognize there is an urgent need to increase capacity and expand services in central Alberta, and the awarding of this contract signifies progress being made towards ensuring patients can receive the health care they deserve close to home.”

Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South, also expressed his excitement about the progress.

“I am pleased to see this vital project advancing with the awarding of the construction manager contract to Clark Builders. This is good news for Red Deer and improving access to health care,” he says.

“With site preparations underway and visible construction on the new patient tower beginning soon, there is a strong future ahead for our city.”

The Province notes that a new ambulatory building will also be constructed as part of the redevelopment, but as a stand-alone project to be delivered using a public-private partnership (P3) delivery method.

A contractor for that facility is anticipated for selection by May 2025, with construction commencing shortly thereafter.

The redevelopment project is worth over $1.8 billion, with more than $800 million being pumped into it over the next three years.

Initial site prep has been going on since June 2024 under the guidance of Shunda Consulting and Construction Management.

Terms of the contract with Clark Builders were not disclosed. Clark Builders was also the contractor for the soon-to-open $200 million Red Deer Justice Centre.
