EFFECTIVE AUGUST 15

Lacombe County reduces fire restriction to fire advisory

Aug 15, 2024 | 3:07 PM

Lacombe County is reducing its fire restriction level to a fire advisory, effective August 15, due to precipitation and lower temperatures over the last week.

The County will now issue fire permits for minor burns, but will not approve any permits for large area burn activity until conditions improve.

The following situations are permitted during a fire advisory:

  • Small, permitted burns
  • Safe wood campfires*
  • Bylaw-compliant backyard fire pits
  • Portable propane fire pits
  • Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters

*Safe wood campfires include those in campgrounds, on private lands and in backyards. These must be within a metal, brick, or rock fire ring and comply with the County’s fire bylaw. They are also required to:

  • Be on rock, gravel, sand, or another non-combustible surface that extends at least one metre around the fire.
  • Have a responsible person in attendance to keep fires under control at all times and extinguish before leaving.
  • Have enough water on site to extinguish the fire.

Lacombe County reminds residents and visitors that off-highway vehicles can start wildfires, and advise to frequently check that hotspots are free of debris and mufflers and spark arrestors are working properly.

Campfires should never be left unattended. When leaving a fire, soak it, stir it, and soak it again until it is cool to the touch, and ensure it is extinguished.

Finally, the County asks that cigarette butts are disposed of safely as they can easily light dried brush and grass.

This fire advisory may be elevated to a restriction or complete ban at any time and will remain in effect until conditions have improved.
