Lacombe Nurseries Limited Residence officially designated as a Municipal Historic Resource

Lacombe city council has officially designated the Lacombe Nurseries Limited Residence as a Municipal Historic Resource under the Province of Alberta Historical Resources Act.

“The Lacombe Nurseries Limited Residence is a great addition to our City’s Heritage Preservation Program,” Mayor Grant Creasey said. “This designation ensures the building will continue to maintain its importance to our community’s history. Thank you to the current owners of the residence and the Heritage Resources Committee (HRC) for their important work preserving the legacy of this building.”

City officials say the Lacombe Nurseries Limited Residence is a Craftsman bungalow constructed in 1922. The 1.5-story home features a low profile with a moderately pitched gable roof, natural materials, and a covered front porch. The exterior has a cottage-like appearance and has been expanded over the years. It features original elements, including its side-gabled roof and a gabled front porch supported by tapered square columns on brick/concrete piers. The City says it is significant for both its unique architecture and its connection to the founders and operators of the Lacombe Nurseries venture in Lacombe.

After reviewing and working with the applicant, City officials say the HRC has endorsed the application for municipal historic designation. “As time passes, once significant elements of a community can become all but forgotten,” HRC Chair Myles Chykersa said. “Looking at a map of Lacombe today, it’s hard to imagine that until 1991, much of north-west Lacombe was a thriving tree nursery. This wonderful residence, itself hidden amongst mature trees on 58th street, is a monument to the pioneering spirit that built Lacombe and also a testament to the owners who have done to keep it in such a magnificent condition.”
