AUGUST 13-16

Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship teeing off in central Alberta

Aug 13, 2024 | 10:02 AM

The 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship is taking place in Innisfail for the first time this week, and two central Alberta golfers are expected to compete for the Silver Cup.

The tournament takes place from August 13-16 at the Innisfail Golf Club, a first-time occasion within its 100-year history, the anniversary of which fell on July 13.

“The golf club was established in 1924 and we’re celebrating our centennial,” said Brett Kelly, host committee chair for the championship. “That comes into it certainly with Golf Canada – I know they like to celebrate those kinds of things, so that was part of the reason I think we got selected to host the tournament.”

Kelly says 156 golfers are expected to compete. The central Alberta golfers participating are:

  • Michael Song of Red Deer, Red Deer Golf & Country Club
  • Sean Kelly of Innisfail, Innisfail Golf Club

As a result of a qualifying round on August 9, Brae Rogalczyk of Innisfail is also on the roster as a fourth alternate player.

“Innisfail’s a fantastic course for something like this. It plays just over 6600 yards, which isn’t overly long by golf course standards, but people in the golf community know how difficult Innisfail is,” Kelly says. “The course is in fantastic condition, the greens are immaculate as always. They break a lot, they’re generally pretty receptive for shots, so I think, personally, it’s a perfect venue for the junior boys.”

Athletes will compete through four rounds over the week. The full list of athletes can be found here, and Kelly says this year’s roster is particularly impressive.

“It’s not a stretch to say that someone who’s going to eventually run a PG Tour event will be playing. The caliber of golf is going to be exceptional,” he said.

Anyone wishing to observe the event may attend, and there will be no admission fees.
