First Rider program to show young students school bus safety

Aug 9, 2024 | 11:24 AM

Young students throughout central Alberta, and their parents, will have the opportunity to start the school year learning how to ride the bus safely through the annual First Rider event.

This event is free to attend and will reach four central Alberta communities.

Chinook’s Edge, Red Deer Public, Red Deer Catholic, and Wild Rose School Divisions as well as Prairie Bus Lines are working together to run the event. They will have coordinators and staff members at each location to help students and their parents.

Participating students will:

  • Watch a Winnie the Pooh school bus safety video
  • Learn how to ride the bus safely when the bus is moving
  • Practice safely entering and exiting a school bus
  • Experience a short school bus ride
  • Participate in an emergency evacuation

The First Rider program began in 2009 and aims to give young people a better understanding of safety in time for the new school year.

The program will run from 3-7 p.m. with the following dates and locations:

  • Red Deer and area: Tuesday, August 13 at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School parking lot
  • Olds and area: Wednesday, August 14 at École Deer Meadow School parking lot
  • Rocky Mountain House and area: Wednesday, August 21 at West Central High School / St. Dominic High School
