11-Month Driving Prohibition

Five-month sentence for man charged in Red Deer road rage incident

Aug 2, 2024 | 2:19 PM

Correction: A previous version of this story did not contain full and comprehensive details of the trial process, so has now been corrected to reflect that.

It’s five months in jail and an 11-month driving prohibition for a man charged in a Red Deer road rage incident that resulted in a partial leg amputation for the victim.

Andrew Charles Hunter, 37, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench on Aug. 1, 2024, after being convicted on one count of dangerous operation of a conveyance. He was found not guilty on counts of failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm, and aggravated assault on May 2, 2024.

His sentencing date was set following a jury trial held in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench this spring.

Hunter was originally charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, failure to stop after an accident resulting in bodily harm, and assault with a weapon in the Jan. 26, 2020, incident.

RCMP said shortly after the incident that at about 4 p.m. that day, the 26-year-old male victim was driving westbound on 67 Street as he went to make a pick-up from a restaurant near Golden West Avenue.

Matthew Ekstrom, the victim, spoke to rdnewsNOW in 2020 about his perspective of the altercation that ensued.

It began, he said when he was in the middle lane and realized he needed to get right in order to make his turn in time. As he sped up to switch lanes, Ekstrom alleged that so too did the vehicle to his right, blocking his path.

Other facts determined during the course of the trial led to the guilty and not guilty verdicts, respectively.

During the course of the altercation, Ekstrom’s leg was run over, and had to be partially amputated.
