IWWF World U17 Waterski Championships in Calgary

A major waterskiing competition is coming to Calgary.

More than 130 of the world’s top youth waterskiers will come to Calgary to compete in the 2024 IWWF World U17 Waterski Championships from August 1-4.

Athletes from more than 20 countries will convene at the Lakes of Kastynstone, 10 kilometres south of Calgary, at Predator Bay Water Ski Club.

The games will have three competitions:

• Slalom
• Trick
• Jump

Minister of Sport and Tourism Joseph Schow said, “We are thrilled to host such an extraordinary gathering of young talent. Alberta is known for its vibrant sport culture, and the Predator Bay Water Ski Club’s world-class facilities and natural scenery make it the perfect location for these world championships.”

11 Canadians are competing in the games, including Twelve-year-old Sofia Pelkey from Bragg Creek. Pelkey, the youngest athlete representing Canada, swept the U17 Girls categories in Slalom, Trick, Jump, and Overall at the Jr. Canadian Open this summer.

Alberta’s government is providing $35,000 for the planning, staging and delivery of the competition, which is expected to draw in around 1,500 spectators.
