RDES sends officers to assist in Jasper wildfire management

Jul 25, 2024 | 12:01 PM

Two Chief Fire Officers from Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) have been sent to assist the Incident Management Team handling the wildfire in Jasper.

They are expected to be deployed for seven days.

RDES deputy chief Curtis Schaefer said the department received a request on the evening of July 24 for structural firefighters and apparatus, but the City was unable to fulfill this request due to staffing shortages.

“The situation in Jasper is not good, and our thoughts are with the people that live up there and that have been evacuated, and the firefighters trying to do their best up there at this time,” said Schaefer.

He said that if the City receives another request, it will evaluate the situation.

Mayor Ken Johnston shared on social media Thursday, “Good morning friends. Our hearts are grieving over the Jasper wildfire, the citizens and emergency services personnel. A terrible time for our fellow Albertans.”
