The winner of the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation’s grand prize Dream Home package was given the keys to her newly built custom home on July 23.

Located in the developing Evergreen neighbourhood, the Sorrento Custom Homes creation is valued at $1,072,624 and boasts four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms across 2,796 square feet.

“It is life-changing; it means a reset, a new start, a move from a community I’ve lived in for 34 years, but a chance to move into this beautiful house,” shared Maxine Rumohr, who currently resides in Sylvan Lake but will be officially calling Red Deer home when she moves in on August 12.

Rumohr received the news that she won on June 27, which also happens to be her late father’s birthday.

“Today changed my life because on June 27, my wishful thinking turned into this beautiful reality” she said.

Some of her favourite features of the home are the built-in air conditioning, the furnishings from Urban Barn, the underfloor heating, and the general atmosphere of the home.

“My favourite part of this house is the feeling that you get when you first walk into that kitchen and dining room with all that beautiful stonework,” Rumohr said, “like I’m already home.”

She added that she has supported the event for years and sees buying a ticket as a simple way to support the Foundation’s work and the impact it has on the community.

The Foundation also presented Mary Vincent, of Red Deer, with the keys to her Tree Hugger Tiny Home prize valued at $163,798, and Carolyn Pelerine, of Cochrane, with her Mega Bucks 50/50 prize, a cheque for $303,600.

The Dream Home Lottery is an annual fundraiser designed to provide the Red Deer Regional Hospital with essential equipment, and this was its 26th successful year. The exact amount raised this year is still being calculated.

“We’re provided with a list of equipment that is prioritized as the most important for our hospital, whether it be services being cancelled because we don’t have it, or the newest innovation,” said Manon Therriault, CEO of the foundation. “This lottery directly supports that, and it allows us to be quick with the turnaround for those urgent needs.”

This year the funds raised will help provide phototherapy systems, which allow patients to hold and soothe infants during phototherapy treatments, cardiology case carts that monitor cardiac rhythms during stress testing, and other equipment.

“This is a community initiative. We have countless people that support it, and those countless people are supporting countless people because the hospital serves half a million people,” said Therriault.

Its next big fundraiser will be the Festival of Trees later this year, with tickets going on sale on October 7.
