Jul 17, 2024 | 4:01 PM

A suspect that allegedly fired at police while trying to evade arrest in an incident that occurred on June 22, 2024, has been charged with multiple offences.

At 11:40 p.m. on the day of the incident, Alberta RCMP, Calgary Police Service, and RCMP from Didsbury and Olds coordinated to arrest the suspect, who had previously fled from police in a separate incident. Together, they deployed a tire deflation device and successfully disabled the suspect’s vehicle on the QE II Highway near Highway 581.

Mounties say there was then an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police, before they were able to speak to the suspect and deescalate the situation. The suspect then surrendered. There were no injuries to either party.

As a result of the investigation by the Southern Alberta District General Investigation Section and Calgary Police Service, the suspect, a 34-year-old Calgary resident, was charged with the following offences:

  • Mischief under $5000 (x2)
  • Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal
  • Flight from police
  • Dangerous operation of a conveyance
  • Fail to comply with blood demand
  • Discharge firearm with intent to wound/maim (x2)
  • Assault on peace officer with weapon (x2)
  • Reckless discharge of a firearm at a place
  • Reckless discharge of a firearm endangering life (x3)
  • Possession of firearm in motor vehicle
  • Use firearm in the commission of an offence
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (x2)
  • Possession of firearm contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
  • Resist arrest
  • Flight from peace officer

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, the suspect was remanded into custody and will be appearing in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on July 17, 2024.
