Searchers redouble efforts to locate Red Deer man swept away in North Thompson River

KAMLOOPS — Searchers have not given up their desperate quest to locate an Alberta man who was swept away in the fast-flowing North Thompson River last week.

Stan Cappis and a friend were enjoying the river with several young people Friday afternoon (July 12) near the Tournament Capital Ranch in Rayleigh when two of the younger people stepped off of a sandbar and started to be carried downstream.

Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet of Kamloops RCMP says the 50-year-old Red Deer resident and his friend jumped in to rescue the two, but only three of the four made it to shore.

“Stan’s friend and the youths were able to get to the shore however Stan was swept away,” said Shoihet in a news release. “He was last seen rounding the bend of the river.”

In the immediate aftermath, RCMP and Kamloops Search and Rescue volunteers were assisted by K-9 and aerial units, as well as the Kamloops detachment’s Forensic Identification Section, Kamloops Fire Rescue and a number of civilians.

Shoihet says search efforts will continue through Wednesday (July 17).

Cappis is described as white with an athletic build and dark hair. He was last seen wearing shorts and sunglasses.

Anyone who lives around the North Thompson River south of the Tournament Capital Ranch in Kamloops is asked to keep an eye out. If you have further information on the incident, you’re asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 and refer to file number 2024-22138.
