Newly recruited general surgeon now practicing in Red Deer

Jul 16, 2024 | 2:48 PM

A newly recruited general surgeon is now working full-time out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and City View Surgical Associates Clinic.

Officials with Alberta Health Services (AHS) say Dr. Emily Mitic has been practising in Red Deer temporarily while covering a maternity leave since January and became a permanent member of the team on July 8.

“On behalf of the Government of Alberta and residents of Red Deer and area, I’d like to offer a warm welcome to Dr. Mitic,” says Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health and MLA for Red Deer-North. “Her skill and expertise will improve local access to healthcare services for central Alberta residents.”

AHS says Dr. Mitic grew up in southern Alberta and received her medical degree from the University of Alberta in 2015. She later completed her general surgery residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Sudbury, Ont., in 2021.

Prior to arriving in Red Deer, Dr. Mitic was in surgical practice in Timmins, Ont., for two years, and has done short-term temporary positions in various locations in Ontario, B.C. and Alberta.

“Red Deer is the third largest city in the best province in Canada,” says Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “It is good to see medical professionals coming to Red Deer to serve families and individuals in our wonderful community.”

AHS officials say Dr. Mitic has returned to Alberta to be closer to family. She credits the year spent in an integrated community clerkship in Sylvan Lake, which included a significant amount of time working at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, for her decision to practice here.

“The ICC program was an invaluable educational opportunity for me, and I have many fond memories of working at Red Deer hospital as a medical student,” says Dr. Mitic.

When not working, Mitic enjoys yoga, cooking, biking, hiking and skiing.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it is continuing its efforts to recruit for physicians across the central zone to meet community needs. AHS says it has physician resource planners who are dedicated to identifying and pursuing international and domestic physician recruitment opportunities. They work with various community partners and organizations, such as the Rural Health Professions Action Plan, and independent physician recruitment and retention committees.
