Ringsteken event to prompt temporary road closures in Ponoka

There will be temporary road closures in downtown Ponoka on Friday, July 19 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the fifth annual Downtown Ringsteken Event, hosted by the Alberta Friesen Horse Association.

The following roads will be impacted:

  • 51 Avenue (from 50 Street to 51 Street) event area
  • 50 Avenue (from 50 Street to 51 Street) event staging area

Ringsteken is a traditional Dutch game where points are awarded for each ring a competitor catches. Rings are caught by riders who are either in a carriage or on horseback trotting towards the ring and attempting to put a lance through it.

The horses will be ridden or driven to the event at 5:30 p.m. from the Ponoka Arena Complex (4410 – 54 Street) to downtown Ponoka. The riders and horses will return to the Ponoka Arena Complex around 8:30 p.m.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution in these areas and watch for horses and pedestrians.
