Roughly 1,000 customers affected by early morning power outage in Red Deer

Jul 11, 2024 | 1:39 PM

Crews with the City of Red Deer’s Electric, Light and Power Department (EL&P) are investigating the cause of a large power outage early Thursday morning.

Dean Walker, Senior Utilities Superintendent, says the outage began at 6:50 a.m. and affected roughly 1,000 customers before being restored again at 7:23 a.m..

“The areas involved were Clearview Ridge, old Clearview, parts of Rosedale, parts of Deer Park, and into the north edge of the downtown area, 55th Street kind of,” explains Walker. “Crews went out and we did a quick patrol of the overhead lines and after that, our process is to test the lines, so they sent out a test, what we call a ping, and after they pinged it, we closed a breaker back in which restored the power.”

Walker says it’s important that if you see something, say something.

“Stay away from downed power lines, don’t get yourself into an unsafe situation and call into our front desk. After hours is automatically routed to our after-hours call centre and the more information we have, the quicker and easier it is for us to get out and respond to a problem,” adds Walker.

To report a power outage during regular business hours: 403-342-8274 (7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

After hours: 403-348-5700 (evenings, weekends, holidays)
