Grass Fire Caused By Discarded Cigarette

Didsbury RCMP issue fire warning

Jul 10, 2024 | 9:58 AM

Police are reminding Albertans to be mindful of how smoking materials are being discarded, following a grass fire in central Alberta Tuesday.

On July 9, 2024, at approximately 2:10 p.m., Carstairs Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire in the east ditch of the QE11 northbound lanes, between Township Road 293 and 294. Mounties say the fire is believed to have been started by a discarded cigarette. Thankfully, the fire was contained quickly.

Police remind residents that most of Alberta remains under a heat warning, noting the ditches, and all other areas, are extremely dry right now. By throwing a cigarette out your window, RCMP point out you are risking property damage, and the lives of those around you and the first responders who have to deal with the fires.

Mounties strongly remind you to please be aware of the dangers of discarding flammable materials out your vehicle windows.
