June 2023 Incident

Trial date set for man charged in fatal stabbing

Jul 5, 2024 | 4:15 PM

A trial date has now been set for a man charged in a fatal stabbing in central Alberta last year.

Ian Lawrence Saddleback, 42, is scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Nov. 3, 2025.

The date was set following a two-day preliminary hearing in May to determine if his case had enough evidence to go to trial.

It was on June 3, 2023, just after 10 p.m., when Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a stabbing that had occurred at a residence on Samson Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, RCMP located a victim with serious injuries. Police say they attempted to administer first aid to the victim and called EMS. Sadly, upon EMS arrival, Mounties say the victim who was identified as a 34-year-old male resident of Maskwacis, was deceased. Officers quickly located and arrested a suspect.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation with the assistance of Maskwacis RCMP.

Saddleback was charged with second-degree-murder.
