There has been a stay of proceedings for a central Alberta RCMP officer charged with theft.

Brandon William Smith, 44, was scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Justice from June 18-19, 2024. However, according to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), two charges were stayed by the prosecutor before the trial commenced as they did not meet the standard for prosecution, while the justice dismissed two other charges against Smith.

It was In May 2022, when RCMP say they were made aware of allegations that an officer was in possession of seized exhibits taken from the Blackfalds Detachment.

As a result of an ongoing investigation, on July 10, 2023, RCMP executed a search warrant at the officer’s residence in Red Deer. From the search, officers seized items that were believed to have been stolen from the exhibit room at the Blackfalds Detachment.
