2025 Trial

Trial date set for Alberta RCMP officer accused of assault during 2020 arrests

A trial date has been set for an Alberta RCMP officer accused of assault during an arrest which took place after a vehicle fled police near Lacombe over three years ago.

Constable Raymond Wallace, 33, is scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Justice on March 17, 2025.

It was on March 14, 2021, when the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate assaults alleged to have occurred during the arrest of individuals by RCMP officers on Nov. 14, 2020, after a vehicle fled police on a road outside of Lacombe.

Officials say evidence gathered during ASIRT’s investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe that two of the occupants had been assaulted during the arrest process. ASIRT says the investigation was forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS) to determine whether the evidence met the standard for prosecution.

Following a review of the investigation and having been advised that the ACPS was of the opinion that the evidence met their standard for prosecution, ASIRT Executive Director Michael Ewenson determined that the involved officer should be charged.

On Feb. 22, 2021, ASIRT officials say Const. Raymond Wallace was charged with two counts of assault under Sec. 266 of the Criminal Code.

As this matter is now before the courts, ASIRT says no further information will be released.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
