A man charged in a fatal shooting in Maskwacis two years ago has been sentenced to life in prison.

The sentence was handed down during what was supposed to be a two-week jury trial in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench which began June 10, 2024.

It was about 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2022, when Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a shooting that had allegedly occurred at a local convenience store.

The victim, a 27-year-old male who’d been living in Maskwacis, was taken to hospital but later died.

Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, which took over the investigation, charged Shayden Trey Rain with second degree murder.
