Man arrested after attempt to rob woman near downtown Red Deer grocery store

Jun 16, 2024 | 3:02 PM

Red Deer RCMP have arrested one person after a series of incidents in and near the downtown on Friday, June 14.

It was about 3:30 p.m. when RCMP responded to a report of a theft of a motor vehicle at the downtown Original Joe’s.

Before officers could arrive, the vehicle allegedly fled at a high rate of speed, running red lights and driving erratically, police say.

The suspect is said to have caused a collision, fled that scene, and continued driving erratically before ditching the vehicle.

He then fled on foot and ran in front of cars, stopping traffic, and attempted to get into vehicles. He was eventually able to convince a driver to give him a ride.

Shortly after, RCMP received calls stating that the same male was attempting to steal vehicles in the Superstore parking lot.

The suspect allegedly robbed an adult female of her keys, but a male bystander was able to chase him off.

When the suspect tried to get into another vehicle, he was apprehended and detained by two male bystanders until police arrived to conduct the arrest.

Police say no one was seriously injured.

As a result of the investigation, 26-year-old Jesse David Hagel, a resident of Red Deer with a registered address, was charged with:

  • Robbery;
  • Dangerous driving;
  • Fail to remain;
  • Theft Under $5000;
  • Attempted Theft Over $5000 (x2);
  • Fraudulently obtain food; and
  • Mischief.

Hagel was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on June 28, 2024.

The Alberta RCMP thank the members of the public who helped protect the victim and apprehend the suspect. Furthermore, the RCMP remind the public not to leave their cars running and unlocked, with the keys inside.
