Rural infrastructure projects get provincial funding

A number of projects in central Alberta are receiving funding through the Alberta government’s Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP), the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership (AMWWP), and the Water for Life program.

The three programs will invest more than $236 million into 125 projects around Alberta.

“These provincial grants will help local communities repair aging infrastructure and build capacity for future population and economic growth,” says Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors.

“Upgrades to water and wastewater infrastructure, airports, bridges and roads will improve Albertans’ quality of life and improve everyday travel.”

Highlights include:

Red Deer County – three projects – STIP

i) Bridge replacement – budget of $1.608 million, grant of $1.206 million – located on Township Road 380, east of Range Road 33, over a tributary to the Medicine River (built in 1969; replacement to be complete by Oct. 15, 2024; will be wider and safer)

ii) Bridge replacement – budget of $254,000, grant of $233,000 – located on Township Road 352, west of Range Road 23 over the Little Red Deer River (built in 1972; slated for construction in 2026; will be wider and meet all legal load requirements)

iii) Runway overlay at Big Bend Airport – budget of $1.208 million, grant of $906,000 (County to release more information soon)

(Red Deer County)

County of Stettler – two projects – STIP

i) Culvert replacement – budget of $315,000, grant of $236,250 – located south of Gadsby, near Township Road 37-4, between Range Roads 17-3 and 17-2

ii) Culvert replacement – budget of $315,000, grant of $236,250 – located near Nevis, west of Hwy 12, between Hwys 12 and 21, on Range Road 18-1

Lacombe County – one project – STIP

i) Bridge replacement – budget of $383,170, grant of $287,378 – located north of Milton Road on Range Road 26-5 (built in 1967, has been closed since November 2023 due to safety reasons, degradation of structure; to be replaced with bridge culverts)

Delburne – one project – AMWWP

i) Lagoon upgrade – budget of $480,000, grant of $360,000

Didsbury – one project – AMWWP

i) New reservoir – budget of $5.683 million, grant of $2.541 million
