Maskwacis RCMP respond to multiple gunshot complaints, working with Chiefs on safety

Jun 15, 2024 | 12:22 PM

Maskwacis RCMP are stepping up proactive patrols, they say, after an increase in alleged gun-related crime.

On June 10, officers responded to reports of gunshots being fired at a local home.

On June 11, RCMP received a similar call and responded.

There were no injuries in either incident.

However, the investigations did lead to a recent traffic stop in Wetaskiwin, in which a search revealed a loaded 9mm handgun and sawed-off rifle.

A 29-year-old and 24-year-old have been arrested and charged with recklessly discharging a firearm. Both remain in custody.

An arrest warrant has been issued for a third person, 23-year-old O’Shea Hunter.

“The public will see more visible proactive patrols in the community and increased safety while we continue to investigate the recent crimes,” says Staff Sergeant Richard McKay, who notes discussions have been had with local Chiefs and band councils about how to heighten and prioritize safety.

“While we do everything in our power to support the community, we are asking residents for help. Please report any information as it relates to the whereabouts of illegal firearms and who is in possession of them.”

If anyone has any information about these crimes or firearms in the community, please contact the Maskwacis RCMP Detachment at 780-585-3767.
