Central Alberta wind speeds hit the century mark during June 11 storm

It was wickedly gusty around central Alberta and in Red Deer on June 11, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

A weather summary issued June 12 indicates the city saw, at some point likely around 5-6 p.m., gusts of 80 km/h.

Bellshill, a small area about 100 km due east of Bashaw in Flagstaff County, topped all of Alberta at 111 km/h.

Gleichen saw 106, Calgary International Airport recorded 98, and Esther, east of Hanna, got to 98 also.

There were no power outages reported in the City, a spokesperson confirms, however Doug Evans, the City’s biodiversity supervisor, says crews have been and continue to be (as of Wednesday afternoon) very hard at work cleaning up downed trees and branches.

“Our emergency readiness is good,” he says. “Anything that is a risk to effect the power grid, or is a danger to the public, property or roads, is prioritized.”

Evans clarifies that the damage is widespread, but a large amount of it was on the north end. He says Blackfalds also saw damage.

The City of Red Deer has taken 30 to 40 service requests since the storm hit.

“One thing different this spring than last is we’ve seen more precipitation and higher relative humidity,” Evans adds. “That can add to the severity of these storms that come through.”
