Alberta NDP celebrates first day voter turnout in leadership election
Hours after the final Alberta NDP Leadership race debate ended, party officials say members logged onto their computer and voted for the leader they want to lead the party into the next election.
By 3:30 p.m. NDP officials say on the first day of voting, 11,633 of the more than 85,000 Alberta NDP members cast their ballots for their choice to lead the Alberta NDP and be the next premier of Alberta.
“The high number of voters on the first day shows the strength of our party and the interest and enthusiasm in this leadership race,” said Amanda Freistadt, Chief Returning Officer for the Alberta NDP Leadership Race.
“Throughout this four-month period we have seen our membership and interest in the Alberta NDP grow. All four leadership candidates have captured the imagination of the membership and have offered a real alternative to the UCP,” added Freistadt.
