Red Deer Fish and Game Association to host second National Range Day

May 30, 2024 | 12:59 PM

The Red Deer Fish and Game Association will host its second National Range Day event on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at its Outdoor Range.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., residents are welcome to attend the family-friendly event that will have a variety of firearms available to try, vendors, and information about the Possession and Acquisition Licensing process and hunting courses. Chief Firearms Officer Teri Bryant will also be in attendance to answer questions.

”It’s something that we want to continue because it’s part of our culture to have hunting and sport shooting. It’s a way to promote how much fun (it is), and to educate people because a lot of people just don’t really understand. We hear so much stuff from the States with gun culture and it’s not the same as what Canada is,” says Karen Leckie, a member of the planning committee for the event.

The event is free, and lunch will be provided.

The Red Deer Fish and Game Association has three ranges with varying guidelines: the Outdoor Range, Indoor Range, and pellet gun trails at Habitat Land, a members-only camping and recreation area.

Canada has 2.3 million registered gun owners, and Leckie suspects that Alberta contributes a significant portion of this total due to its high concentration of hunters as well as sport shooters.

“The community is all about conservation, and safety, and fun, and providing for families,” she says.

In her experience, moose, deer, and geese are Alberta’s most popularly hunted prey.
