RECREATION CENTRE DEFICIT REPORT

City council supports Innisfail proposition to Alberta Municipalities

May 27, 2024 | 4:10 PM

Red Deer city council will support the Town of Innisfail’s proposition to Alberta Municipalities (AB Munis) to review a report on recreational infrastructure deficits within municipalities across the province.

On May 27, council unanimously voted to act as a seconder to Innisfail’s proposition to AB Munis. The proposition stems from concern that sports, culture, and recreation facilities are commonly run by municipalities on a deficit due to keeping services accessible to the public and a lack of opportunity to recuperate costs.

Innisfail’s office of the mayor and city council proposed that understanding the scope of these deficit problems may help determine future funding priorities for the province. On May 3, 2024, the Government of Alberta announced $30 million in funding to the Active Communities Initiative to support these kinds of facilities, however municipalities are not eligible to apply.

AB Munis holds an annual conference wherein municipalities can suggest resolutions to common public policy concerns which, if adopted, then inform the organization’s advocacy work.
