Whitecourt Wolverines get new and ‘inspired’ owner in Cory Masse

May 23, 2024 | 4:36 PM

New ownership has been approved for the Whitecourt Wolverines.

Cory Masse was approved today by the Alberta Junior Hockey League to take over the team that has been the focus of many questions over the past few months.

That’s despite finishing atop the regular season standings and making an appearance in the AJHL’s championship series.

Masse is s local businessman who technically takes control of the Wolverines from the league, which recently took reins of the team from the group that is now owners of an expansion team in Devon. On that note, it’s also been announced that team will be known as the Xtreme, after the hockey academy there.

“I envision a revitalization of the team and a restoration of its former glory within the hockey community,” states Masse, who was raised in Whitecourt. “Our leadership and commitment will demonstrate a dedication to providing the Wolverines with the resources necessary for success.”

Masse is inspired, the league says, by his father Darrell who successfully established a modular home business in the area, hence Cory’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Masse and wife Terriann are proud owners of two successful businesses in Whitecourt.

“We are grateful for Cory’s commitment to the community of Whitecourt and the Alberta Junior Hockey League and welcome his passion and desire for the Wolverines; making our game and League stronger,” says AJHL Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk. “The AJHL and its Board of Governors recognized the importance of maintaining a team in the community and look forward to Cory’s contribution to the success of the League.”

With the announcement comes other news of restructuring.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League will restructure as two divisions for the 2024-25 season – the AJHL North Division and AJHL South Division. The Whitecourt Wolverines and new Devon Xtreme team will both play in the North Division.

The league had been operating with two divisions until five teams defected to the BCHL midseason, which prompted a conversion to a temporary one-division format with 11 teams.
