Exciting New Beginnings

Canyon Ski Resort to open new summer adventure park

May 23, 2024 | 1:43 PM

The snow may have melted, but Canyon Ski Resort is open and eager to show off the summer activities it has to offer, including a new adventure park opening in July.

The adventure park will feature a dual zipline, outdoor climbing wall, free-fall drops, a net park, and an aerial course with games and challenges of varying difficulty.

David Martel, general manager and co-owner of the resort, says this will be the first net park in western Canada.

“That will cater to a broader demographic of people. Smaller children that might not be able to fit into a climbing harness, they can experience the outdoor net park which will still take them to the same heights as the aerial challenge park will,” he says.

The net park will be a completely enclosed network, eliminating fall risks and the need for harnesses. There will be bouncer nets, climbing nets, and a slide.

Its Canyon Coaster, a luge track with nearly 440 feet of vertical drop total across its 1345 metre length, opened May 18, while tubing opens on June 22. Red Deer locals can ride the coaster for a discounted fee of $19 on Friday nights, as weekends can get crowded by those travelling from out of town.

“As far as the guest experience goes, we do see a different demographic of people coming in the summer. We get a lot of visits from Edmonton, Calgary, southern Alberta, and northern Alberta coming whether they’re driving through, or they make us a destination,” Martel says.

The upcoming summer additions will have a big impact on the business goals for the resort.

“Our goal is to have a year-round, four-season resort that people can enjoy,” says Martel. “For us it’s been a great way to go from a seasonal business with seasonal staffing to now being able to offer full time year-round employment.”

An exact opening date for the Canyon Adventure Park is still to be determined due to weather-related setbacks, however there will be information about a grand opening ceremony forthcoming. Martel hopes they will be ready to launch by the Canada Day weekend.
