Elnora man sentenced to 7 years in jail for double fatal crash

May 22, 2024 | 12:50 PM

A man from Elnora has been sentenced to seven years in jail for causing the deaths of two people in a crash that happened June 17, 2022, near Trochu.

In a Drumheller courtroom earlier this month, now 44-year-old Richard Douglas Bell was given seven years in prison, a six-year driving ban, and a firearms ban.

The charges for those portions of his sentence include two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

He was also sentenced to 1.5 years in jail for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, though that will be served concurrently to the seven-year term.

The driving and firearms prohibitions expire six years after Bell is released.

All other charges against Bell were withdrawn.

In the crash, which occurred around 10 p.m. at Highway 587 and Township Road 332, 90 km southeast of Red Deer, a 20-year-old female and 21-year-old male were pronounced deceased at the scene.

After investigation, RCMP originally said two cars were northbound on Highway 21 when one rear-ended the other, causing it to drive across the road where it was hit by an oncoming semi.
