Strengthening affordable housing system

Province provides record funding for all community housing operators

The Alberta government says they intend to strengthen the province’s affordable housing system through Budget 2024 by providing record funding to all 48 housing providers to operate community housing.

Community Housing is defined as a mix of single-family homes, apartments and townhomes, where the rent is based on 30 per cent of household income. Currently, the program in Alberta prioritizes low-income households with dependents and less than $25,000 in assets.

Government officials say they are committed to ensuring vulnerable and low-income Albertans have access to a roof over their head and a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home, noting that housing providers play a key part.

Budget 2024 commits an increase of $21 million in operating funding to Alberta’s housing providers, which means they will receive a total of $75 million in 2024-25. The funding will go towards keeping units open and help cover rising day-to-day expenses impacted by inflation such as utilities, supplies and staffing.

“Housing providers are the backbone of Alberta’s affordable housing system, and our government is firmly in their corner. More people are coming to our province than ever before, and through Budget 2024 we are helping to ensure low-income individuals and families can have a safe place to call home,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.

More than 110,000 Albertans currently live in the over 60,000 government-subsidized homes. With the cost of living rising, officials say demand is rapidly growing.

When determining budget allocations, the provincial government says the size of local housing providers and the number of units they run were taken into account. They confirm that every housing management body that operates community housing received an increase in their operating budget.
