The 26th annual Red Deer Hospital Lottery is officially underway, with a dream home valued at over one million dollars up for grabs.

The lottery, which is put on by the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation (RDRHF), has raised more than $12 million over the years, with hopefully a lot more in 2024 to help fund items on the foundation’s critical needs list.

Those state-of-the-art pieces include a phototherapy system to allow parents to hold and soothe their infant(s) while undergoing phototherapy for neonatal jaundice, as well as a cardiology case cart to monitor cardiac rhythms during stress testing.

“Given the success of this lottery, it’ll touch many other things on the critical list, but we sometimes have to wait until the end to understand what we’re able to fund. The list is always changing too, because things break and new innovations come; then there’s recruitment of new physicians where we need to understand where their skill-sets lie,” says Manon Therriault, CEO, RDRHF, who touched on how changes at the hospital are changing the way RDRHF goes about its business.

“Knowing the amount of movement going on and expansion of services is a huge priority in terms of how we look at being ready to fund a piece of equipment. The three things we consider are: can something be moved, is there potential to recruit a new physician, and if it will expand service.”

The dream home, at 16 Emmett Crescent in Evergreen, was built by Sorento Custom Homes for the tenth year. Work on the house also included 50 local trades.

Bill Robinson, president, Sorento Custom Homes, spoke about the longevity of his company’s partnership with the foundation.

“Like any company, we want to contribute to the community, and the hospital is a centre-point of central Alberta. Pretty much everybody is going to use it at one point in their lives,” he says. “If we can help with improvements at the hospital to make people’s stay better, or make their medical assistance any better, it’s a good feeling, and all of our trades are happy to be involved too.”

This year’s lottery includes something new and unique, that being a “tiny home” from Tree Hugger Tiny Homes. That prize, valued at over $163,000, can be viewed starting April 16 on the grounds of Red Deer Regional Hospital.

There’s also the Mega Bucks 50, with one winner taking home half of a jackpot that could reach up to $1,000,000.

Of course there are early bird draws.

For the early bird prize of $20,000, tickets must be purchased by 11:59 pm. on May 6. The draw is May 16 at 2 p.m.

For the second chance early bird draw for $10,000, tickets must be bought by 11:59 p.m. on May 27, with the draw at 2 p.m. on June 6.

Additional prizes, including the tiny home, are worth a total $1.29 million dollars, and also include kitchen items, laptops and drones, to name a few.

Main lottery tickets cost $25 each, five for $100, 10 for $125, or 25 for $250. Mega Bucks 50 tickets are $10 each, 10 for $25, 25 for $50, or 50 for $75.

The cutoff for the main lottery, Mega Bucks 50 and additional prizes, the tiny home included, is 11:59 p.m. on June 17, with the final draw at 10 a.m. on June 27.

The dream home, with its 2,796 square feet, four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and finished living space, is open Saturdays and Sundays from April 13 to June 16.
