Red Deer RCMP’s Crime Reduction Unit was called out over the weekend to help with the arrest of a suspect in a stolen vehicle that rammed a police vehicle at a highway rest stop Sunday night.

On April 6, 2024, at 6:10 p.m., Wetaskiwin RCMP located a stolen GMC 1 ton vehicle at the Bear Hills truck stop in Bear Hills, Alta.

Upon determining the vehicle was stolen, Mounties say responding officers requested assistance from the Alberta Real Time Operations Centre (RTOC), RCMP Police Dog Services (PDS) for a Tactical Vehicle Intervention Technique (TVIT), and deployed a Tire Deflation Device (TDD).

According to police, the suspect immediately rammed past the PDS vehicle, disabling it.

RCMP say the stolen vehicle fled the area southbound on Hwy 2. Police say they were able to successfully deploy resources from Central Alberta District and the Red Deer Crime Reduction Unit to covertly monitor the vehicle. Once south of Red Deer, assistance was provided by Calgary Police Service – HAWK One.

Police say they were able to locate and successfully apprehend the vehicle and suspect on Hwy 2 at the 40 Avenue overpass south of Airdrie. According to Mounties, the RCMP ERT Team was successful in conducting a second Tactical Vehicle Intervention, deploying an additional Tire Deflation Device at Hwy 2 and Secondary Hwy 72 to bring the flight from police event to a conclusion.

RCMP say no officers or subjects involved were injured during this incident, noting, however, the investigation continues. Police say additional updates may be issued.
