Chinook’s Edge announces Carstairs teacher as 2024 Edwin Parr Award nominee

Emily Wilson, a grade three teacher at Carstairs Elementary School, is the Edwin Parr teaching award nominee from Chinook’s Edge School Division (CESD).

The annual Edwin Parr Award goes to six outstanding first year teachers in Alberta’s public school system, and is presented by the Alberta School Boards Association.

Wilson is being nominated by CESD for her skills in planning, instructional design, differentiation and exemplary assessments.

“Emily is just an exceptional teacher,” said Mike Garrow, Division Principal for Chinook’s Edge School Division. “She meets the needs of every student in the classroom and she inspires students to do the best they can possibly do. The biggest thing I took away from observing and working with Emily is that students are so engaged in her lessons they don’t want to leave the classroom or stop the learning.”

Wilson says the nomination came as a surprise.

“I’ve worked with a lot of great teachers. I owe my success to them because they have been such good role models for me and showed me what excellent teaching looks like,” she says.

“There are so many reasons why I became a teacher. It comes down to the kids. I love interacting with them. I love seeing them grow and flourish and being the intelligent and unique kiddos that they are. It’s just such a pleasure.”

Wilson says students are worth it when it comes to engaging with them and meeting each of their unique needs.

“I want them to feel successful, smart, and brave and not be afraid to make mistakes,” she says.

2024 Edwin Parr Award winners will be announced later this spring.
