Investigation underway into in-custody death in Red Deer

Apr 1, 2024 | 4:59 PM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an in-custody death in Red Deer.

On March 25, 2024, at 10:56 p.m., Red Deer RCMP were dispatched to a residence on 50 Ave for complaints of a male acting erratically and running onto the roadway.

Upon arrival, Mounties say the suspect was identified by police, arrested and transported to the Red Deer detachment.

While lodging into cells, police say the male appeared to be in medical distress and EMS was requested. Upon EMS arrival, RCMP say the male became unresponsive. Mounties say life-saving measures and CPR were initiated and the male was transported to the Red Deer Regional Hospital where he was being monitored in the ICU.

On March 31, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Red Deer RCMP were notified that the male was declared deceased after succumbing to his injuries in the ICU.

In compliance with legislative requirements, Mounties say the Director of Law Enforcement was immediately notified and directed the RCMP to investigate the incident under ASIRT oversight. Police say events like this are difficult for everyone involved, however the RCMP say it believes in accountability and transparency and will provide full transparency to ASIRT.

Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, Mounties note the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP says it is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT.
