Red Deer athletes brought home some medals this weekend at the junior national freestyle ski championships.

From March 20-24, five local athletes qualified for the 2024 Canadian Junior Park & Pipe Championships, held in Whistler B.C., and Calgary.

The Jr. Nationals are one of the largest freestyle competitions of the season with over 60 males and 30 females from across the nation competing. In order to qualify, the athletes must acquire points based on their provincial and national level event results.

For the younger skiers, doing well at the Jr. Nationals will result in them being invited to compete at more national level events, like the Canada Cup series, for next season.

Part of the Central Alberta Freestyle Ski Club, three of the athletes competed in moguls and aerials in Whistler, with the final results as:

  • Kate Leeds U16 female: 3rd in aerials, 6th in single moguls, 3rd in moguls/aerials combined
  • Birkley Timms U18 female: 4th in aerials, 14th in single moguls
  • Hayden Mathews U16 male – 42nd in single moguls

In Calgary at the Winsport/Canada Olympic park, two local athletes competed in the halfpipe, slopestyle & big air categories, with the final results as:

  • Madi Phillips U14 female: 1st in Halfpipe, 6th slopestyle, 7th big air
  • Harper Turnbull U14 female: 5th in Halfpipe, 9th slopestyle, 8th big air
