Open Farm Days taking registrations for 2024 event

Mar 26, 2024 | 10:18 AM

Registration is now open for the 2024 edition of Alberta Open Farm Days, which goes Aug. 17-18.

The long-running two-day celebration of agriculture lets Albertans get an inside glimpse of where their food comes from with unique on-farm experiences.

This year, Open Farm Days celebrates the Year of the Alpaca, one of the province’s fluffiest animals and an important part of Alberta’s fibre industry.

“Alpacas are a relatively new species to Alberta farms, the first arriving here in the 1980s,” says Tim Carson, CEO of Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies.

“Since then, the population has grown to 28,500 alpacas in Canada with 40 per cent of those animals right here in Alberta on 432 farms. They’ve become an important part of Alberta’s thriving fibre industry which includes products such as goat wool (cashmere), sheep wool and hemp.”

Planning tools and marketing resources such as farm gate signage are available at no cost to all registered host farms.

There are free sessions for farms to take advantage of in advance of the actual event, including Serving and Selling Food on Your Farm, Ticketing, Marketing in Your Community, Insurance, and Creating Experiences for Kids.

Last year, Open Farm Days had 130 participating farms.
