Oil spill slips up Rebels ahead of playoffs

Mar 23, 2024 | 9:58 PM

It was not a good night for the Red Deer Rebels as far as building momentum ahead of the WHL Playoffs next weekend.

The Rebels lost 7-3 to the Edmonton Oil Kings at the Peavey Mart Centrium, giving each team four wins in the season series.

The main difference is that Red Deer is set to face Medicine Hat in the first round while Edmonton is outside the playoff picture looking in, and well below the Rebels in the standings.

Red Deer will get a chance to avenge the loss in each team’s regular season finale, Sunday at 4 p.m. from Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Scoring summary

Scoring got started Saturday when Gracyn Sawchyn (19th) scored at the nine minute mark of the first. It was 1-0 Oil Kings after 20 minutes.

In the second, Marshall Finnie (20th) made it 2-0 just 55 seconds in.

Adam Jecho (22nd) then made it 3-0 with a power play marker at 7:16.

At 9:03, Red Deer finally got on the board with a Jeramiah Roberts (5th) goal to make it 3-1.

But Gavin Hodnett (22nd) at 13:04 and Skyler Bruce (14th) at 18:42 added two more before the middle frame was out, and it was 5-1 after 40 minutes.

Roberts (6th) scored again at 3:35 of the third, cutting the lead to 5-2.

But Jecho (23rd) at 4:21 and Smyth Rebman (9th) at 5:33, struck back in quick succession to make it 7-2.

Mats Lindgren (8th) scored a power play goal for the Rebels at 14:48, but it was far too little, too late.

Final score: 7-3 Oil Kings.

Chase Wutzke takes the loss for Red Deer, but was pulled at 5:33 of the third period after making 19 saves on 26 shots faced. Rhett Stoesser stopped all 10 after that. Hudson Perry gets the win for Edmonton with 23 saves on 26 shots faced.
