Beyond Food Community Hub promoting period equity in Blackfalds

Mar 23, 2024 | 10:50 AM

A program in Blackfalds continues to push for Changing the Cycle.

The Beyond Food Community Hub in the central Alberta town launched Changing the Cycle in 2022 hoping to make it easier for people who menstruate to access menstrual products, and also to raise awareness about the fact that items should be more accessible.

“Many people in Alberta do not have the financial means to purchase period products, so working towards menstrual equity is very important,” says Karie Ackermann, community operations. “[We want] to have discussions around period poverty to help remove stigma associated with periods, and most importantly, emphasize that access to menstrual products is a right, and feeling clean, confident, and capable during one’s period is a necessity.”

Ackermann says people can contribute to the program by making monetary donations or the items themselves.

Thanks to the program, products like pads and tampons are now available for those who need it for free at the hub’s front counter.

“In Canada, menstruation is one of the top two reasons why people who menstruate miss work,” she adds.

“The inability to access period products is a contributing factor. One in four menstruating people in Canada struggle to buy menstrual products. Feminine hygiene products are the least donated item to food banks in Alberta.’

Earlier this month, MEGlobal celebrated International Women’s Day (March 8) by making a $5,000 donation to the Changing the Cycle initiative.

If you’d like to help, donations of menstrual products are accepted, and monetary donations allow the hub to take advantage of better pricing on items.
