Drivers Encouraged To Stay Home

Snowfall warning issued for Red Deer area, RCMP warn of poor travelling conditions

Mar 19, 2024 | 10:22 AM

A snowfall warning is in place for the Red Deer area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada:

10-30 cm of snow is expected by Friday morning across southern Alberta. A multi-day snowfall event will start overnight tonight and last until Friday. A widespread area of 10-20 cm of snow is expected, but an axis of 15-30 cm is expected from Nordegg/Rocky Mountain House south through the Calgary area over the 3 day period.

This snowfall warning will be expanded farther south as the system progresses. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

In addition, Southern Alberta RCMP detachments are preparing for the potential of a spring storm, which may come with treacherous road conditions, in the upcoming 48 hours.

Traditionally, Mounties say the region between Airdrie and Innisfail on the QE11 has been an area of great concern.

Police say if you do not have to travel, please stay home.

If you must travel, RCMP want to advise motorists to use extreme caution, slow down and maintain an increased distance between yourself and other drivers.
