Sylvan Lake expands list of 2024 census questions

Mar 14, 2024 | 9:55 AM

The Town of Sylvan Lake is expanding its 2024 census, which will begin April 15.

As rdnewsNOW reported March 1, the Town will conduct a census this year at a cost of around $60,000.

In addition to counting residents, the Town will ask the following:

1) In addition to a new high school, what facilities would you like to see partnered on the high school site?

  • Answer options: Library, Fine Arts Centre, Commercial business centre, all-season indoor fieldhouse

2) Do you work outside of Sylvan Lake for employment?

  • Answer options: Yes, work away extended periods; Yes, daily commuter; Yes, carpooling; no

3) Would you support tax funding for a public transportation system?

  • Answer options: Local only, Local and Red Deer, or would not support

Mayor Megan Hanson expanded in particular on questions two and three.

“Question two will help inform us on how reliant we are on individual vehicles, what sort of future transportation infrastructure we may need and will be interesting information to share with potential Sylvan Lake employers when it comes to the volume of our workforce that commutes out of community for employment opportunities,” she said.

“The question around residents’ shopping habits serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it prompts respondents to consider where they spend their money. Secondly, it provides insight into potential gaps in Sylvan Lake’s retail offerings. This is a question we asked during the 2015 census which will allow us to compare if the trend has changed.”

On question one, she noted that a new high school is still hypothetical, but that the Town wants to get feedback on possibilities for the site proactively.

More information about the 2024 census in Sylvan Lake will be released by the Town in the coming weeks at sylvanlake.ca.
