RCMP investigating fatal head-on collision north of Red Deer

Mar 13, 2024 | 2:02 PM

One person is dead following a head-on collision just north of Red Deer early Tuesday morning.

On March 12, 2024, at 5:01 a.m., Red Deer RCMP received a report of a head on collision on Highway 2A between Township Road 391 and 272.

Upon arrival, Mounties say the driver and sole occupant of one of the vehicles, a Ford focus, was deceased. Police say the deceased has been identified as a 74-year-old Lacombe resident.

According to RCMP, the two occupants of the other vehicle, a Lincoln MKZ, were located nearby. Both were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Mounties say the vehicle they were inside had been reported stolen during a car jacking on March 7, 2024, in Red Deer. Additionally, RCMP located a loaded SKS rifle in the ditch which had been discarded by the driver after the collision.

Although early into the investigation, Mounties say initial evidence indicates that the deceased was driving the Focus southbound when they crossed over the centre line into northbound traffic, striking the MKZ head on. Police say these are early reports and are subject to change.

RCMP have charged the driver of the Lincoln MKZ, Red Deer resident Tyler Tyrone Palmantier, 44, with:

  • Possession of stolen property over $5000
  • Possession of a controlled substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Weapons offences (x3)

RCMP say Palmantier has been taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody with his next appearance set for March 13, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer.

Police say the passenger of the Lincoln MKZ was released without charges but note the investigation into this incident is continuing and charges may be updated.

RCMP which to express their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
