Blackfalds town councillor resigns suddenly

Mar 13, 2024 | 12:17 PM

Rebecca Stendie has resigned from her seat on Blackfalds town council.

The resignation was announced during the March 12 council meeting.

Stendie had been on council since 2017. In that election, Stendie received 472 votes, the fifth most out of six available spots. In 2021, she received 809 votes, second most.

“Council wishes Councillor Stendie all the best in her future endeavors,” a statement says.

rdnewsNOW reached out to Stendie Wednesday morning to find out why she resigned.

“I love my community and am exceptionally grateful for their support and encouragement for the past 6.5 years,” she said. “I am saddened to be resigning from council; it was not an easy decision to make. I will continue to dedicate my time and service to Blackfalds in the ways that I am able. Huge heartfelt thanks to Blackfalds residents for their trust in me over the years. And tremendous appreciation to Blackfalds staff for their dedication to creating an incredible, vibrant, and welcoming community.”

The Town adds that in her resignation letter, it does not specify a reason, nor is she required to provide one.

According to the Municipal Government Act, this triggers a by-election to be held no later than July 2, 2024.

However, council has directed the mayor to request this requirement be waived due to the timing and cost of a by-election. The next municipal election is scheduled for fall 2025.

More information about a possible by-election will be announced as it becomes available, the Town says.
