Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics recap

This past week, the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre was buzzing with excitement as Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) hosted the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship.

The RDP Kings Hockey team defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in the best-of-three semi-final.

Here is a summary of the results:

Women’s Volleyball National Championship

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens put forth a strong effort, but were eliminated from medal contention at nationals.

In their quarter-final match, the RDP Queens swept the Humber Hawks (25-22, 25-13 and 25-14). Outside hitter Emma Holmes contributed 22 kills, nine digs and two assists. Rachel Perry added seven kills for the Queens.

The Queens pushed the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners to the limit, but dropped a hard fought five set marathon in the national semi-finals (30-32, 21-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 10-15). Red Deer’s Holmes had 13 kills. Libero Francesca Sandini, who is a Justice Studies student, accumulated 18 digs.

In the bronze semi-finals, the Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx got by the RDP Queens in four sets (30-28, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-16). Perry led the Polytechnic with 13 kills.

The Lakeland College Rustlers won national gold. The VIU Mariners received silver and the Nordiques earned bronze. A summary of Saturday’s results, along with the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship Award recipients, is available online.

Hockey

On Friday, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team defeated the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings 3-2 in game one of the best-of-three semi-final. Hayden Clayton, Chance Longjohn and Erik Miller scored for the Kings. Fifth-year goaltender Arik Weersink made 19 saves for the Polytechnic.

The RDP Kings downed the U of A Augustana Vikings 6-2 in game two to advance to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Hockey finals. Jaxon Steele, Chance Longjohn, Ryland McNinch and Nolan Doell scored for the Polytechnic. Hayden Clayton, who is a Justice Studies student, added a pair of goals for the Kings. Lethbridge’s Weersink made 26 saves.

In the other semi-final, the Concordia University Thunder defeated the Briercrest College Clippers in two straight games.
