In a close call game, the Red Deer Rebels once again beat the Calgary Hitmen 4-3 on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Rebels won 2-1 against the Hitmen last Saturday on home ice with new coach Dave Struch. The team also leads the season series with the Hitmen 6-1 and have six-straight wins versus Calgary.

In a home-and-home series, the Rebels will have a chance at clinching a playoff spot at tomorrow night’s game.

The Hitmen opened the scoreboard early in the first period with a goal by Carson Wetsch on Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke. At 3:15, the home team were up 1-0.

Although Red Deer was one man down after Kalan Lind received penalties for roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct, Ollie Josephson went on a breakaway, scoring his 11th goal this season through the five-hole of Calgary’s netminder Ethan Buenaventura. The unassisted shorthanded goal tied the game 1-1 at 15:04.

With the Hitmen’s Dax Williams sent to the box for delaying the game, the Rebels’ Lind backhanded his 15th goal of the season off the rebound with less than one minute left in regulation. Mayo, returning to the ice after missing two games for an upper body injury, and Mats Lindgren assisted the power play goal to put the team in a 2-1 lead.

Red Deer was outshooting Calgary 13-8 after 20 minutes of play.

Just over one minute into the second period, the Rebels’ Carson Birnie tapped in his 14th of the season at the crease. Jeramiah Roberts and Samuel Drancak got the helpers to push their lead 3-1.

Red Deer’s Talon Brigley turned the lead into 4-1 with a goal through the backdoor. His 17th of the season was assisted by Lind at 13:27.

Both teams were 11 for shots on goal in the middle frame.

The Hitmen began to tail the Rebels in the final period, first with a goal by Keets Fawcett at 6:03, putting them behind 4-2.

Calgary’s Maxim Muranov then scored just 41 seconds later, making it 4-3 for the Rebels.

The score didn’t budge for the rest of the period. Although the Hitmen pulled out netminder Buenaventura for the last minute, it was not enough to tie the game.
