March 2023 Incident

Stay of proceedings for Red Deer Mountie charged with assault during suspect’s arrest

Mar 7, 2024 | 1:29 PM

There has been a stay of proceedings for a Red Deer RCMP officer charged with assault during a response to a break and enter by local Mounties last year.

According to the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service (ACPS), it was determined the officer’s file did not meet the standard for prosecution and the charge was stayed on Feb. 26, 2024.

Constable Steven Cerant, 46, was charged with one count of assault following an incident on March 3, 2023.

That’s when Red Deer RCMP responded to a break and enter in the city of Red Deer. Officers located a suspect and in the process of the arrest, officers were assaulted and sprayed with bear spray.

While lawfully placing the suspect under arrest, an altercation occurred which resulted in injuries to the suspect. The suspect was taken to the detachment and examined by EMS.

As a result of a statutory investigation, on Dec. 1, 2023, Constable Steven Cerant was charged with assault.

Mounties now say, however, that Constable Cerant, who has over three years of service with the RCMP has been cleared to return to full operational duties.

Officials say the Alberta RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts and note it’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable.

This is why, say RCMP, when they become aware of a situation that requires review, they immediately initiate internal processes to look at the totality of the incident, including the actions of the RCMP, the use of force during the incident, and the duty status of the member.
