Gun-related charges have been laid against a Red Deer man after northern Alberta Mounties arrested the driver of an ATV allegedly driving carelessly throughout Fort Chipewyan last weekend.

On Mar. 3, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., Fort Chipewyan RCMP say they were conducting proactive patrols within the community of Fort Chipewyan when they observed a male operating an ATV in a carless manner on Delta Road.

With the assistance of Wood Buffalo RCMP, Fort Chipewyan RCMP stopped the male, who was subsequently arrested. Upon search of the male, police say they located a loaded 9mm pistol and hollow point ammunition.

As a result of the investigation, RCMP have charged Red Deer resident Keanu Redbear, 19, with:

  • Unsafe storage of firearms
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon when knowing possession unauthorized
  • Possession of firearm/weapon/device/ammunition in motor vehicle
  • Possession of restricted firearm/prohibited weapon with ammo without licence/registration
  • Assault on Police Officer with Weapon/Causing Bodily Harm
  • Resists/obstruct peace officer

Mounties say Redbear was also charged with drive carelessly and drive uninsured motor vehicle on highway under the Traffic Safety Act. Police say Redbear was taken before a justice of the peace and released from custody with the next court date set for Mar. 7, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Chipewyan.

“On behalf of the Fort Chipewyan RCMP, I would like to thank the residents of the community for their continued support and for their shared determination in achieving safer communities,” said Cpl. Warren Davison of the Fort Chipewyan RCMP.
