NDP MLAs on the party’s leadership race

Mar 1, 2024 | 10:44 AM

The leadership race for Alberta’s NDP continues.

There are four candidates running, Calgary MLA Kathleen Ganley and Edmonton MLA’s Sarah Hoffman, Rakhi Pancholi, and Jodi Calihoo Stonehouse.

Edmonton Southwest MLA and Jobs, Economy and Trade Critic Nathan Ip says he is backing Hoffman and is a co -chair for her campaign.

“I’ve known Sarah for over a decade. I worked with her when she was a trustee on the Edmonton Public School Board. I was a trustee for 10 years prior to being elected to the legislature and so, I know her work ethic, I know her values.”

Ip believes Hoffman would do what is right for Albertans.

“We need somebody who has a bold and courageous vision for Alberta. She’s not afraid to talk about issues that are uncomfortable.”

Calgary Foothills MLA and Technology and Innovation Critic Court Ellingson says picking the new leader will not be an easy choice.

“That’s a very good thing, right, for people in Alberta to think of this as like the next election and who do you want to be tour leader? Who do you want to be premier? That’s the decision that Alberta NDP members are making.”

Ip and Ellingson spoke to EverythingGP at the Growing the North Conference held at Evergreen Park.

Voting will take place until June 22. Anyone who wants to cast a ballot has to buy or renew their NDP membership by April 22.

The party’s rules for the leadership race can be found here.
