Roughly 40 Red Deerians get free hair cuts and manicures at local Salvation Army

Roughly 40 Red Deerians gathered at the Salvation Army on Wednesday to get free haircuts and manicures by local students.

Their third annual event was partnered with MC College students, eight hair stylists and six estheticians, to provide the beauty services at the church and office space.

Major Kent Hepditch, Pastor at the Salvation Army, said there’s a need for this event in the community.

“It’s so expensive to get a haircut. Even for men, it’s not cheap so a lot of people just can’t afford to get a nice haircut,” he said. “When it’s starting to get long, you don’t feel the same but when you get your hair done, it makes you feel so good.”

Jo-Anne DeVries, frequent goer of the church, said she has watched others receive satisfactory services at the event in previous years but decided to participate for herself for the first time this year.

“These girls needed customers, so I just came right over and someone took me right away. I haven’t had my nails painted for years,” she said, admiring her coral pink nail polish as it dried. “They look really nice; she did a good job.”

Jillian Miller, Director of Red Deer’s MC College, said the students have shown confidence in their abilities and haven’t required any extra help as the near the end of their programs.

With a similar turnout to last year, she says the institution enjoys giving back to the community by volunteering their time and practicing their skills.

“We’ve seen some familiar faces so that’s nice that they’re coming back because they enjoy seeing us and we enjoy seeing them. Everyone is just all smiles and happy to be here as are we,” she said.
